Education

With the resources it provides to the public offstage, the Education Department supplements the artistic life of Empty Chair.  Our goal is to help audiences and students discover new ways of engaging with our productions, exposing them to academic perspectives on the plays and performance workshops. The department's current programs include the Fall 2010 Lecture Series and the reading guide initiative for this year's summer season plays. The Education Department also encompasses our annual summer camp for elementary and middle school students.

Empty Chair Drama Camp

This two-week camp is intended to give elementary and middle schoolers an exciting experience with Shakespeare in performance. In the mornings, campers break into groups of five or six and engage in workshops such as drama games, Shakespeare’s World, or set painting.  In the afternoons there are rehearsals and tech work for an abridged version of one of Shakespeare’s plays which will be performed on the last day of camp.

Lecture Series

Empty Chair's future lecture series aims to bring the questions we tackle in rehearsal into a more academic environment. These talented lecturers will offer glimpses at the historical, cultural and textual contexts that inform the way we think about the works we perform. Whether examining the role of the clown in Shakespeare's plays or discussing Early Modern publication and transmission practices, we hope to reach a clearer understanding of why we have the texts we do. We are pleased to invite the public to join us in this exploration.
